Black History Month in Journals
There’s something so comforting to know that we’ve been keeping personal written accounts for almost 2,000 years. And even more comforting that the reasons for journaling haven’t changed in that amount of time. The voices that come from famous journals of African American women through history have shown us the timeless benefits of writing about our daily lives. In these journals we get to hear the unaltered experiences of these women. There’s hope for a future, life lessons and expressions of emotions as they deal with racism and navigate through a changing society. Though journals aren’t meant for an audience at the time they’re being written, it’s a privilege to peek behind the curtain into genuine accounts of history through a black woman’s mind. Ida B. Wells, Audre Lorde, Alice Dunbar-Nelson and Barbara Smith have blazed a path in many different areas, but the path for journaling is bright and it inspires me to continue expressing my thoughts on paper.

Journal Prompts For The Month
I get the most out of journaling when I focus on a prompt for more than a day. So, each of these prompts can be used for a week’s worth of writing. Try to dive deep into each topic, writing without worrying about spelling or grammar. Comfortable, free thought is the best way to make genuine entries.
What is your current self care routine? How can you expand on each step and is it benefiting you and others?
What do you need to release from your heart?
How can I practice more kindness towards myself?
How have the women in my life affected me? What are ways they’ve shown me to take care of myself?
The history of journaling is a great reminder that it’s important to release through our words and creativity. Thanks for this!
